JAPANESE LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY TEST
JLPT N5

Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is an international standardized test of Japanese language proficiency to evaluate and to certify non-native language speakers. Further, it is considered the largest-scale Japanese language test in the world. JLPT is entirely a multiple-choice exam covers language knowledge, reading ability, and listening ability. It composes of five levels: N1, N2, N3, N4, and N5, where N1 is the highest, and N5 is the lowest level.

Linguistic competence required for the JLPT is expressed in terms of language activities, such as Reading and Listening. While not noted here, Language Knowledge, such as Vocabulary and Grammar, is also required for successful execution of these activities.

The JLPT is scheduled twice a year in Japan and other countries, and once in some regions.

JLPT N5

One is able to read and understand typical expressions and sentences written in hiragana, katakana, and basic kanji.

One is able to listen and comprehend conversations about topics regularly encountered in daily life and classroom situations and is able to pick up necessary information from short conversations spoken slowly.

The main goal of the N5 is for you to understand some basic conversational Japanese. Note the keyword ‘some’. If you are at an N5 level, you should be able to survive a lot of basic situations like meeting new people, shopping, or talking about your day. In other words, a lot of foundational functional language.

Vocabulary (kanji, spelling, expressions and paraphrases)

Grammar and Reading (forming sentences, using the right verb form, basic texts and reading comprehension)

Listening

TEST SCORING SCHEME

Vocabulary, grammar, reading :                       120 points
Listening:                                                             60 points
Total score:                                                        180 points


Pass: 80 points (must have 38 points in Vocabulary, grammar, reading and 19 points in listening to pass)

Each section has a different time length.

Vocabulary – 20 minutes
Grammar and Reading – 40 minutes
Listening – 30 minutes

The exam lasts for 1.5 hours in total

“JLPT Points & Practice” is a collection of Japanese-Language Proficiency Test practice questions designed to help test takers acquire the minimum skills required for the test in a short period of time and approach passing. The aim is to deepen your understanding and improve your skills while solving problems on learning items carefully selected by the authors of “grammar,” “characters/vocabulary,” “reading comprehension,” and “listening comprehension.”
